Nuclear Reactor in Malaysia

Do you know that Malaysia has one nuclear research center in Bangi? Located at about 30km from Kuala Lumpur, the main capital of Malaysia, the center is focusing on basic nuclear science education.

Here are some facts about it:

TRIGA PUSPATI Reactor (RTP)

  • Been operating since 28 June 1982.
  • TRIGA stands for Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics.
  • The reactor is a pool-type and is capable to generate 1MW of electricity.
  • No incident has yet to occur after 29 years been operating.
  • It has been gazetted as Restricted Area 1 under Malaysian Federal Law and Category 1 Key-point Target under state law.
  • Demineralised water acts both as coolant and neutron moderator, while graphite acts as a reflector.
  • Uses uranium zirconium hydride (UZrH) as the fuel.
  • UZrH has a large prompt negative thermal coefficient of reactivity. In simple words; as the temperature of the core increases, the reactivity will rapidly decreases. Core meltdown is unlikely to happen, although not impossible1.
